Description

In this professional development workshop for artists, Los Angeles–based gallerist Walter Maciel will discuss evolving changes in the art world and their impact on the working relationship between contemporary gallerists and artists. The workshop will address the different ways artists’ work can be introduced to a gallerist, as well as the challenges galleries face in representing emerging artists as they build their careers.

In an informal and interactive setting, he will discuss opinions on participating in art fairs, the importance of showing your work to a broader audience, changes in gallery attendance brought on by social media, and challenges that affect the current role of a gallery space.

Maciel is this year’s guest juror for HERE, BAC’s annual members’ exhibition. From nearly 200 works on display in the first part of the show, he will select artists to be included in Part 2.

A graduate of UC Berkeley, Maciel’s career has spanned Northern and Southern California for more than two decades. After serving as gallery director for two prominent Bay Area galleries, he opened Walter Maciel Gallery in Culver City in 2006.
